About
P. Kai Knight provides counsel on privacy and data security, helping clients comply with both domestic and global data protection laws. He focuses his practice on assisting businesses with swift responses to cybersecurity threats such as ransomware attacks and business email compromises, placing particular emphasis on preventive measures and navigating federal and state regulatory investigations that follow these incidents.

For clients navigating U.S. and EU privacy laws, Kai develops and manages privacy compliance programs that include performing gap analyses, mapping data, writing privacy notices, policies, and procedures, setting up data sharing agreements, giving advice on DSAR processes, and carrying out DPIAs and privacy risk assessments. Kai also offers legal guidance on new or developing services, products, or projects to ensure they meet privacy requirements, including those set by various U.S. states, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Federal Trade Commissions (FTC) Act and its enforcement, and Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).
In addition to incident response and privacy/security privacy counseling, Kai regularly works alongside the corporate team addressing privacy and cybersecurity due diligence issues in M&A transactions.
Prior to entering private practice, Kai clerked for the Hon. William S. Greenberg, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims.
Kai is a former member of the U.S. Army, where he served as an interrogation detention squad leader and tactical human intelligence assistant team leader. During his time as a soldier, and later working as government contractor, Kai led intelligence and counter-terrorism operations in Iraq, conducted strategic interrogations in Guantanamo Bay, and performed in intelligence analysis in Afghanistan.
