Matthew DeFrancesco has diverse experience representing clients involved in high-profile matters across a wide breadth of industries. Mr. DeFrancesco’s practice focuses on a wide variety of complex commercial litigation matters before federal courts, state courts, and alternative dispute resolution tribunals, including matters involving title disputes, as well as intellectual property, accounting malpractice, post-closing M&A, real estate, breach of contract, employment, construction, data security, and benefits and insurance disputes, among other things.

  • Mr. DeFrancesco also has extensive experience dealing with all aspects of competition law, including antitrust litigation, government investigations, and multi-jurisdictional merger clearance matters. He represents clients in connection with obtaining antitrust clearance for high-stakes, multi-billion-dollar mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures reviewed by the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice, as well as international competition law enforcers. His merger control experience spans a vast array of industries, including the aerospace, oil and gas, casino, entertainment, education, and publishing industries, among others. In addition to competition law, Mr. DeFrancesco’s experience includes the representation of financial institutions, public companies, asset management firms, and individuals involved in government investigations and litigation matters arising out of alleged securities law violations.

    Aside from counseling clients in connection with ongoing disputes, Mr. DeFrancesco also advises clients on risk mitigation and compliance matters that arise in an ever-changing international regulatory landscape. Mr. DeFrancesco provides preemptive guidance and tailored training to clients regarding business transactions and corporate compliance programs, to ensure observance with competition law, anti-corruption law, and other applicable regulatory regimes around the world.

    Prior to joining Pierson Ferdinand, Mr. DeFrancesco worked at FisherBroyles, LLP. Prior to that, he worked at Milbank LLP and Troutman Sanders LLP. Prior to that, he gained public sector experience during his tenure at both the Chambers of the Honorable Harold Baer, Jr. in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Antitrust Bureau of the New York State Attorney General’s Office. Currently, Mr. DeFrancesco is an Adjunct Professor of Antitrust & Competition Law at New York Law School.

Awards and Recognition

Mr. DeFrancesco has been recognized by New York Super Lawyers as a “Rising Star” in business litigation and antitrust for four consecutive years from 2017 to 2023. Before attending law school, Mr. DeFrancesco received his B.S. in economics, cum laude, from the Villanova School of Business. Subsequently, he received his J.D., magna cum laude, from New York Law School, where he was a merit-based Presidential Scholar and a merit-based Harlan Scholar for the Center of Business Law and Policy. During law school, Mr. DeFrancesco was the President of the Corporate Law Society, a Notes and Comments Editor for the New York Law School Law Review, as well as a teaching fellow responsible for devising lesson plans for, and independently teaching, first-year law students. Upon graduating, he was awarded the Trustee’s Prize for being a finalist for the highest grade point average at the time of commencement.
