About
Joel M. Ferdinand is a Co-Chairman and Co-Founder of Pierson Ferdinand (PierFerd), an international, partner-led, culture-first, technology-driven law firm built for scale, efficiency, and elite client service. In January 2024, he helped launch PierFerd with more than 130 partners across more than 80 practice areas — an opening widely described as one of the largest law firm launches in U.S. history. By year-end 2025, PierFerd surpassed 270 partners and reported record billings of US$126 million – reflective of an approximate 61% year-over-year increase – and headcount growth of 35% year-over-year. Today, PierFerd is approaching 300 partners globally that service clients in more than 25 markets across 90 practices and areas of law.

Joel is both a founder and an operator, with leadership experience spanning law firm economics, operations, build, talent strategy, technology adoption, partner incentives, enterprise risk, risk mitigation, post-restructuring growth, and exit execution. As Co-Chairman, he has helped build a modern law firm model centered on culture-first, remote operations, proprietary legal technology tools, innovative profit-sharing structures, and transparency in attracting and retaining sophisticated legal talent.
Before co-founding PierFerd, Joel served in senior leadership at a national law firm, where he was Managing Partner of Litigation, Global General Counsel, a member of the firm’s five-person Executive Committee, and head of the litigation team, bringing that law firm into the AmLaw200. Earlier in his career, he served as General Counsel and Senior Vice President of Physiotherapy and worked with the CSuite to scale the business with an eventual a sale at a 14.3x multiple. He also practiced in the litigation department of Fox Rothschild LLP as a trial attorney, where his work included matters involving attorneys and law firms, construction, directors’ and officers’ liability, corporate governance disputes, environmental, health law, insurance, zoning, land use, and complex commercial litigation matters.
Joel remains an active business trial lawyer and strategic counselor to companies, family-owned enterprises, and business executives. His litigation and advisory experience spans appellate litigation, bankruptcy adversary proceedings, breach of contract and UCC claims, business divorces, corporate governance disputes, directors’ and officers’ claims, insurance issues, restrictive covenants, shareholder and partnership disputes, and shareholder derivative claims. That work gives him a practical, boardroom-level understanding of how companies, owners, investors, and executives make decisions under pressure. He also continues to serve on boards, including non-profit boards.
Joel’s work at the intersection of legal services, technology, culture, and business management has earned recognition from leading legal innovation, ranking, and peer-review organizations. His publicly reported individual awards, honors, and rankings include: 2025 vLex Fastcase 50, recognizing leaders transforming the legal profession through innovation and impact; Legal 500 US Elite ranking, Atlanta – White Collar Crime; Super Lawyers Rising Stars, Business Litigation / Civil Litigation: Defense / Construction Litigation: Business, 2018–2020; SJ Magazine Top Attorneys, August 2011; Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association James J. Manderino Award for Trial Advocacy; and Merit Scholar, Rutgers School of Law–Camden.
Under Joel’s co-leadership, PierFerd has earned institutional recognition, including being shortlisted for the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards: North America 2025 in “Innovation in Strategic Direction” and later described as “Highly Commended” in that category. The recognition reflects a unique combination of legal judgment, commercial discipline, talent leadership, post-restructuring operating experience, and demonstrated execution at scale.
Joel is a frequent speaker on legal innovation, client relationships, law firm leadership, and the future of legal practice. He earned his J.D. from Rutgers School of Law – Camden, with high honors, where he was Editor-in-Chief of The Rutgers Journal of Law & Religion, was active in the Civil Practice Clinic, and was a member of the Trial Advocacy Competition Team; and earned his undergraduate degree from Rutgers, with honors, along with an undergraduate certificate from the Eagleton Institute of Politics.
